Would you like to set up a WRC supporters’ group?
In the midst of 60% cuts to our funding from the UK Border Agency, we need your support more than ever. See our message to supporters. These cuts are worrying but they bring with them an opportunity for our supporters to get more actively involved with our work. One way you can do this is by setting up WRC supporter groups where you live.
You don’t have to live in Wales, you might be a recent university graduate having been involved with STAR (Student Action for Refugees) and this could be a good way to continue your involvement with supporting refugees and these groups could take whatever form you like. They could: work in collaboration with other groups and organisations near where you live, be informal meet-ups in a cafe, generate awareness about asylum issues amongst your networks through giving out leaflets, word of mouth, take part in campaigns, volunteer at drop-in centres for asylum seekers and refugees or befriend those in your community, groups could even be online based – writing letters, taking part in online campaigns and actions and on social networking sites telling people about the work that we do! These groups could also raise much needed funds for us by putting on events, undertaking sponsored group challenges and helping us to sell our recipe book.
If setting up or joining a WRC supporters group is something that interests you then please get in touch. Look at our Get Involved pages on the website for how inspiration for what to do with your group. If you are unable to be part of a group but would like to support the WRC in another way then please look at our Get Involved and Ways to Donate pages also.
To start a group, a good way may be to start organising an event and start asking people to help you - this gives you an already made team of people that you could then ask to be part of a group. A good first event to do is a Cupcakes & Cast-offs event as it is quite easy to organise and generates a lot of support from people who donate items, cakes and are willing to help out.
Feel free to get in touch for more tips or information, and if you would like the Supporters Communications Officer to come and join you for your first meeting.
