Volunteer
Our volunteers make an enormous and invaluable contribution to our work, and are involved in everything from research for the policy team to organising events during Refugee Week. There are opportunities to volunteer at our offices in Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Wrexham in a variety of roles.
Lots of people volunteer because they are interested in asylum issues or have a personal experience of the system. Working with us means you’ll get a insight into how the sector works and what we do to support refugees and asylum seekers in Wales. You will meet lots of people from different backgrounds and cultures, and it’s a great way to make new friends.
Volunteering is a great way to share your skills and learn new ones. You will be given a pre-defined role and be supported by a Volunteer Co-ordinator or another member of Welsh Refugee Council staff. You’ll get a full induction and can also access training to support you in your role and build your skills and confidence. We can also help you with expenses towards travel, food and childcare.
Here are some of the typical roles that our volunteers fill:
Befrienders
A befriender shows newly-arrived asylum seekers around, helping them with things like registering with a doctor or meeting people in their new communities.
Case Worker
As a caseworker volunteer you can be supervised to provide advice and assistance to newly-arrived asylum seekers visiting our one stop service.
Researcher
As part of our Policy and Communications team, you could carry out background research on a current issue for a campaign or help us with vital policy research work.
Office Team Workers
You could be involved in helping with client enquiries on reception or providing admin support for the Advice Team.
Interpreters
If you speak another language, we’re always looking for interpreters to translate for our clients.
If you’re interested in volunteering, fill in an application form or send us an email. Our volunteer coordinator will get in touch and arrange for you to come to our offices for an informal interview. This will help us to see how we can best use your skills and talents within our team.
